Aloo Matar / Spicy Potato Peas

Aloo matar is a delicious Punjabi dish which is made from potatoes and peas in a spicy tomato base gravy using other flavorful Indian seasoning. Aloo matar is a very delicious vegetarian dish. The best thing of this dish is you can have it any time, in your breakfast , lunch or dinner. So relish this beautiful dish.

Cooking time   20 minutes
Serves 3 to 4


2  cup potatoes   small bite size cube
1 cup green peas shelled (blanched)
½ tsp cumin seed
1 whole dry red chilly 
1 tsp red chili powder or to taste
1 tsp  roasted cumin and coriander powder
½ tsp turmeric powder
1tsp ginger garlic paste
½ cup  tomato puree
8 to 10 fried cashew
½ tsp garam masala powder
2 tsp finely chopped coriander leaves
3 tsp oil
a pinch of sugar
Salt to taste
Cooking Methods

Heat oil in a heavy bottom pan. Add cumin seed and then break the whole red chilly into halves and add. When the cumin starts to pop add ginger garlic paste. Stir for few seconds then add turmeric powder, red chili powder, roasted cumin coriander powder and tomato puree. Stir till oil comes out from the fried masala now add the potatoes and salt. Mix well so the potatoes are well coated with the masala. Now add ¼ cup of warm water. Mix well. Cover and cook for few minutes in low flame till the potatoes are little tender then add the green peas and sugar. Mix well. Add ½ cup of warm water and cook till the potatoes are tender and well cooked. Then raise the flame high then add garam masala and chopped coriander. Mix well. Put off the flame. Cover the lid and give 10 minutes standing time. Before serving add the fried cashew mix well. It will be a crunchy effect to this yummy dish. Serve with paratha, poori or simple roti (Indian flat bread) and salad.

Today I used that concept of Bengali posto but to it add some ingredients to give it a royal touch. The dish looks very rich but it is not that heavy and not loaded with too much of calories but a simple fast to cook easy delicious dish.
